MetrO, your companion on New Year's Eve

We are pleased to anounce the release of MetrO databases for the special New Year's Eve services in Paris (France) and Brussels (Belgium).

Paris: a selection of subway and railway lines will operate after the end of the regular service as well as the usual "Noctilien" night bus lines. All the RATP & SNCF services will be free from 5PM on 12/31 to 12PM on 01/01.
Download the "Paris Nuit Festive" file here.
The database contains the regular subway services (valid until 2AM) and the special services. If you want to try it out, don't forget to set the appropriate day (Tuesday) and time (12PM-6AM) in the program.

Brussels: the subway, a few trams and most of the "Noctis" night buses will run from midnight to 6AM on 01/01. Transportation will be free during this time.
Download the "Bruxelles Réveillon" file here.
The services change at around 1:30AM: set the time in the program at 2AM for services after 1:30. If you want to test the database, don't forget to set the appropriate day (Tuesday) and time (12PM-6AM) in the program.

These services are also available on i-MetrO for the WEB, WAP & i-Mode.

These databases have been built in a rush and may contain errors despite my efforts to make them as accurate as possible. If you find errors before next Monday, please report them quickly.

Thanks to L. Debacker for the information for Brussels!

No more freewares on PalmGear

Motricity has recently merged PalmGear with its new PocketGear platform, removing all freewares from their catalog in the process. While the old site boasted more than 30,000 softwares for Palm, they now have only about 5,000 left...

With 320,000 downloads since its first appearance on PalmGear 8 years ago, MetrO has been among the top 10 favorite softwares for several years and certainly drew quite a bit of traffic to the site. Motricity apparently does not see any value there...

You may remember they went the same road when they upgraded PocketGear not long ago. In that case, some freewares, including MetrO, were later restored but our updates have not been taken into account for the last 3 months.

With the mess that Handango has become, it looks like the large software distribution platforms are almost dead.

MetrO on Handango

For a few years, we have redirected the MetrO downloads to Handango on our release notification mails. The main reason was that we worried our server would not be able to handle the traffic. MetrO on the iPhone (3)

i-MetrO on the iPhoneWith the help of a new iPod Touch, I have finally been able to debug i-MetrO. You can now use the Netvibes platform - with its dedicated version at http://iphone.netvibes.com - and our widget to search your routes on your Apple iPhone or iPod Touch.

For a quick access, I'd recommend you install the widget in its own tab for which you can keep a bookmark. In any case, you should not add too much content in each tab if you don't want to spend your time scrolling like mad...

Everything is not perfect yet: the search page interface is quite slow (at least on my device) and Safari tends to do weird things if you try to move too fast. Another problem I don't (yet) understand: the Google Maps usually work all right but sometimes, for no apparent reason, they won't show.

I have added an iPhone page on our web site for the occasion, where you can find all the options - present and future - you have to use MetrO on your device.

Now, except for possible minor improvements and bug fixes, I expect the next major item in this series will be about the development of a native version of MetrO for the Apple platform.

P. Absolon has prepared a database for the city of Spišská Nová Ves (Slovakia).

MetrO on the iPhone (2)

My efforts to make i-Métro compatible with the iPhone seem to have failed, at least with our "nicer" versions (the basic version is working all right, as far as I know), apparently because of bugs in the Safari browser, but there are good news in the pipe:

  • First, the iPod Touch is now available in France and I will probably get one so that I can make live tests with the browser. The iPhone is also coming, but much later and I don't want to be tied with one operator (especially when its name begins with an "O" and ends with an "e").

  • Second, Steve Jobs has officially announced that an SDK will be released in February, for the iPhone as well as for the iPod Touch. I guess it means we will have to lay our hand on a Mac to develop, but that's some progress. With it, we may be able to develop a "real" version of MetrO for the iPhone.

Our special "works" database for New York (USA) has been updated with the latest advisories from the MTA, and there are a lot of them... Download the new database here or with our usual online update services.

Attention Palm users: this database MUST NOT be installed in main memory on Palm devices - it has to be DIRECTLY installed on a memory card - and will be recognized only by the latest version (5.6.0) of the program.

Next update planned on or around Friday, October 12.

  • Paris-full-travaux (inner city subway, bus and RER networks). To use this one on a Palm device, you must get the new version (5.6.0) of the program and directly install the file on a memory card.

Next update planned on (or around) October 8.

i-MetrO for Netvibes

I don't know whether it's due to the change in the Netvibes "ecosystem" or to the update I requested lately while trying to improve compatibility with the iPhone but the link to our i-MetrO widget has a new url...

I guess that if you want to keep your version up to date, you will have to remove the old one and install the new widget on your Netvibes page.

i-MetrO

A new version of i-MetrO is now online, with two new major features:
  • The service now remembers the last city you selected and will open it directly on your next call. Of course, there is an option to return to the selection page and change the city.
  • For cities where we have coordinates, a new icon next to the route title lets you open a schematic display of the calculated route on a map.

Our work on the iPhone compatibility is still in progress. This new version hopefully solves the previously reported problem with text entry - please post a comment if it does - and the Netvibes version is just waiting for a refresh from the Netvibes team to get the same fix.

Copenhagen

C. Hindsgaul reports important changes on the "S-tog" network in Copenhagen (Denmark) as well as the extension of the M2 Metro line to the airport next week.

Mac Installer for MetrO discontinued

We are sorry to announce that our Mac installer for MetrO (for Windows Mobile) is diconstinued because the program we used has not been updated for a long time and is not supported by recent versions of MacOS X.

Mac users who want to install MetrO on their Windows PocketPC or smartphone should follow the manual installation steps described in the installation guide, based on a manual copy of the cab files to their devices.

PocketGear "kills" all freewares...

PocketGear, which used to be a decent directory for Windows Mobile software, has unveiled its new web site recently. What they did not tell anyone - including those directly interested - is that they decided to remove all freewares from their listings.

The reason is simple, as writes the Developer Relations Manager after an inquiry: "It is possible that we will allow freeware listings in the future, but at this time our efforts must be on those products that generate sales for PocketGear".

I think this is a pretty dumb move: will users go where they will find only commercial software or will they prefer some other place where they will find the software they are looking for, whatever its license model? If you think, as I do, the latter is more likely and although it is no developer paradise either, Handango is clearly taking the lead in this market...

That's a subject we would really like to hear your comments about!

PalmOS & "large" files

Users are beginning to use the new capacity of MetrO 5.6.0 to load our largest databases (such as "Paris-full" or "NewYork-works) on their Palm device and the first issues are arising.

First, you should remember that the program will "see" the MetrO files only if they are in the right place on a memory card. Check the installation guide for details.

Second, the system will load a large chunk of data only if there is sufficient room in memory. And here is a real problem, since we are talking about "dynamic memory" (used to run programs) as opposed to plain free RAM (what's available on the Palm), and some devices have not much of that kind. For example the m5xx will not be able to load the "Paris-full" database (although the "NewYork-works" one seems to get through).

Brest

As every year around the same time, C. Guyon from Bibus (the local transit company) sent us the updated bus network data for Brest (France).

Piešťany

After a pause, P. Absolon has prepared the data for yet another city in Slovakia, Piešťany, and its bus network.

L'viv

F. Wilhelm came back from a trip to L'viv (Ukraine) with data for the local tram network, to which he added a trolleybus line reaching the airport.

Toulouse & the Rugby World Cup

On an idea (and data) from M.D., we have built a special database for Toulouse (France), which will host 4 matches of the Rugby World Cup and will set up a special shuttle service for the occasion. The database also contains a few explanations and a dedicated POI ("Rugby World Cup Stadium").

Download the special file here.

New York (works)

After the latest evolution on the program for PalmOS, I am trying to resume the delivery of our special "works" database for New York (USA).

Download the new database here or with our online update services.

Attention Palm users: as I explained before, this database can not be installed in main memory on Palm devices, it must be installed on a memory card. Additionally, you will need the new version of the program (in english only and still in beta status).

Next update planned on or around Friday, September 14.

MetrO for PalmOS

I am currently experimenting with a version of MetrO for PalmOS that would allow to use "large" databases such as the one for Paris Métro + Bus (or its "works" counterpart), which, until now, can be used only on Windows Mobile or Symbian devices.

There is a catch, though: the databases will only install on a memory card - the OS will never accept these "invalid" files in main memory.

As a bonus, this enhancement might allow me to resume the delivery of the New York "works" database, which I recently stopped providing because of how complex it had become to handle. We'll see about that with the next bunch of MTA service advisories on Friday.

For those who can't wait and want to try the Paris databases, a beta version is available on PalmAttitude forums (sorry, that's in french only).

Paris (works)

The special "works" version of our Paris (France) database has been updated with several disruptions for repair or renovation works:
  • The RATP/SNCF interconnection is suspended on the RER A after 22:30 until Sep. 6; service to/from Poissy and Cergy starts/ends at St Lazare.
  • The RER C service between Bd Victor and Versailles/St Quentin en Yvelines will be suspended next week-end.
  • Station Richard Lenoir is closed until Nov. 13.
  • Station Opéra is closed on line 3 (service on lines 7 & 8 is not affected) until Nov. 21.
  • The renovation works planning has been updated for the coming weeks.

Download the updated "temporary" files:

Next update planned on September 10.

MetrO on the iPhone?

Since Apple launched its iPhone, we have been litterally flooded with requests for a version of MetrO running on the device. However, as you probably all know by now, the iPhone is a closed box without any possibility to install 3rd-party software. At least until Apple changes its mind - which in my opinion is not very likely in the near future - or unless you are a very good friend of Steve J. - which we are not, unfortunately.

The only kind of 3rd-party applications the iPhone accepts are services provided through the Safari browser - and a network connection, of course. It's the reason why, so far, we have redirected users to our i-Métro online service, preferably in its mobile flavor.

With the launch of Netvibes Mobile today, it is possible that a better option has become available. The special iPhone version of their platform is supposed to be able to run the Netvibes modules, including our own which offers more features than i-Métro mobile in a nicer user interface.

If you want to try it, go to the Netvibes site from your PC, create your free account if you don't have one yet and add the i-Métro module to your page (click here for a quick addition). Now point the Safari browser on your iPhone to http://iphone.netvibes.com , sign in and the module should be there.

Let us know if it works as advertised and what you think of the i-Métro module...

New York (works): the end

For the last 8 monthes, I have tried to provide a special version of our database for New York (USA) taking into account the works on the MTA network and this took me 3 to 5 hours every Friday.

Unfortunately, after checking the MTA advisories for the coming week, it has just become apparent that it is impossible for me to keep up with all the planned disruptions. I don't even imagine how New-Yorkers can ever plan a trip in the subway with those changes (just take a look at the advisories for line A, as an example).

Consequently, the "works" version of the New York database is now discontinued: the corresponding database won't be delivered anymore and the i-MetrO service will now use the regular network information only.

I just want to send my apologies to the few (very few, actually) users who were counting on this file for their trips.

Tuesday, August 14, 2007

Bordeaux

V. Lavedan sent the data for the extensions on two tram lines in Bordeaux (France). Now we would have to update the bus lines as well, since there have been significant changes on their services.

About Central European language...

While updating our Budapest data, I have realized that some of our files using Central European languages may lead to errors on Palm devices using specific localization support - such as Piloc -, because of their alphabet ordering.

In order to fix the problem, the next version will include a "hungarian" version of our database for Budapest - in the new "hu" directory in the "international" MetrO package. Other cities affected will be processed if there is demand or when they are next updated. MetrUp will be updated soon to take into account the new encoding, for future updates.

One thing leading to the other, I also discovered that our "international" packaging had a major error for our slovak-encoded databases: they are located under the "cz" directory instead of the "sk" directory. Incidentally, they were also encoded as czech instead of slovak which may be wrong if the letter ordering for these languages are different. Both these issues will be fixed with the next delivery.

Note: all issues discussed here affect only Palm devices (Windows Mobile and Symbian versions are NOT affected) and when using the special encoded databases found in our "international" package.

Update on i-Métro

Our online service has been silently enhanced in recent weeks, with many new cities where the "find a route by address" feature is available.

The covered cities now include: Amsterdam (Netherlands), Arnhem (Netherlands), Berlin (Germany), Boston (USA), Chicago (USA), Eindhoven (Netherlands), Los Angeles (USA), Madrid (Spain), Napoli (Italy), New York (USA), Paris (France), Philadelphia (USA), Sacramento (USA), Toronto (Canada), Utrecht (Netherlands).

This feature is enabled by getting the geographic coordinates for the stops. Therefore, if you want to add a city to the list, you'd just have to provide these coordinates ;-) as described on our "Contribute" page.

Please note that there are a few cities where we already have coordinates but the feature is not activated for one of the following reasons:
- Google Maps does not provide address geocoding in the country (which is the case for London, Santiago de Chile and Singapore);
- Our coverage is not sufficient to provide an efficient service (concerns: Copenhagen, Lisbon, Tokyo, Vancouver, Washington, Vienna).

Manila

P. Pantaleon provided a few additions to our database for Manila (Philippines).

Monday, July 23, 2007

Reminder: Berlin, Philadelphia

V. Lei suggested some improvements on our latest version of the San Francisco (USA) database as well as an update on the evening works affecting Muni Metro lines K, L & M.

He also began preparing some data for the Muni Bus network. Since it will probably be too large to integrate in the current database, we may end up creating a dedicated SF Muni database, including the Metro & Bus services. Any advice on these plans are welcome...
